Private Event Magic Recap! The Sky Lounge on Lady Bird Lake, Austin, TX

This event was a 50th birthday party held at the Sky Lounge on Lady Bird Lake in Austin, TX.  I was hired by Pearl Events Austin to perform 2 hours of Strolling/Mingling Magic at the party.  There were around 60 guests in attendance, and the event had a casual party atmosphere with hors d’oeuvre and a DJ.

Prior to this event, I had another event in downtown Austin, so I caught an Uber from that event to arrive at the Sky Lounge about 30 minutes before my start time of 9PM.  I was already set and ready to go from my previous event, so I just double checked everything and got started performing a few minutes early.  

Since this was a party atmosphere, the guests were very receptive to the magic from the start.  I performed for several groups before a drone show started over Lady Bird Lake.  The show lasted about 10 minutes, so I paused my performance during this period.  Then I was right back at it directly afterward.  

The intimacy of the event meant that I was able to perform a wide breadth of material for each group I approached.  You’ll see in this effect, a coin bends in the participant’s hand!

And shortly after, I performed an effect where a participant’s borrowed $50 bill (signed with a sharpie!) ends up in a lime he was holding!

Throughout the evening, crowds would build as I performed a set.  You’ll see in this video, I was performing the Card in Multiple Wallets for just a few guests when I first approached them.

Then, as I continued to perform, the crowd built, and at the end of my set, there were 7 or 8 guests around me.  You can see this in the Clear Cards effect performed here, when the camera pans out at the end.

Part of performing is not only performing for large groups but also finding guests or tables situated in the corners of the venue.  These guests may not be in the center of the action, but they are just as open and receptive to the magic.  And much of the time, they are even more in need of entertainment, since they are away from the main action of the event.  This was exactly the case at this event, because although many guests mingled around the bar and DJ, there were still plenty who wanted to find a table on the perimeter of the space.

As the evening came to a close, word had spread amongst the guests that I was performing illusions.  Many guests would approach me, having heard about me from others.  Or a guest who had seen me would bring others over to experience the magic as well.  It is always nice to have a warm introduction from guests who have already been amazed by the magic!
